Val Jones is a Devon-based printmaker and painter whose work explores the expressive essence of landscapes through monotypes, collagraphs, and etchings. Her pieces, often abstract or semi-abstract, aim to capture a feeling for a place rather than a literal depiction, reflecting an inner landscape that transcends detailed representation. Val describes monotypes as the most painterly form of printmaking, with each piece being entirely unique. Using inks and rollers, sometimes enhanced with chine-collé or gold leaf, she applies imagery directly onto steel plates, transferring them to Somerset paper via an etching press. The results are vibrant and dynamic, alive with colour and movement. Her work seeks to evoke what she calls “the inner sound,” offering viewers an intimate and expressive connection to the world around them.
